Rising 50 feet high and 70 feet wide, images on the IMAX screen command attention. Add the 3D glasses, 44 speakers and 16 amplifiers within the theatre, and immediately you are moved from viewing a movie to actually being transported into it. And guess what else -- Raleigh is the sole city in NC where you can experience a truly 3D-capable IMAX adventure.
The Wachovia IMAX Theatre at Marbles Kids Museum serves both the need for pure entertainment and the need for entertaining learning. Exhibiting documentary films shot with IMAX cameras, live action concert films and Hollywood feature films re-mastered for the IMAX 70mm film format, this 267-seat facility offers heightened state-of-the-art visual and sound entertainment. Boasting crystal clear imagery with unmatched sharpness, the IMAX 3D screen is coated with proprietary high-grain silver paint in order to maximize light polarization and brightness, enhancing audiences’ perceptions and giving renewed meaning to Hollywood’s “silver screen."
Intriguing educational, immersive documentaries are on constant rotation at the IMAX and are offered with learning labs as an optional component for student groups and educators (all learning lab activities are aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study for grades 4-8). Launch into space in the critically lauded Hubble 3D or dive into the deep in Under the Sea 3D, only two of the various documentary features now playing.
Hollywood has quickly caught on to the lure of the IMAX attraction and has responded with many more films slated to be produced in 3D and re-mastered to fit the 70mm film format. Up this summer, Shrek Forever After 3D and Toy Story 3 3D will be shown in the full IMAX 3D experience, while the wildly anticipated third installment in the Twilight series, Twilight: Eclipse will be shown with optimum picture and sound at Raleigh’s IMAX in 2D.
Admission varies based on type of film and the age of the viewer. Documentaries range between $6.50-$8.95, while feature films start at $9.50 for youth aged 1-11, $10.95 for college students and senior citizens and $11.95 for adults aged 12-59. An updated daily film schedule can be found on line, and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.imaxraleigh.org.
Currently, there are more than 400 IMAX theatres in over 40 countries across the globe, but it’s especially nice to know that Raleigh has one conveniently located in its own backyard.
HelloRaleigh Tip: Check the IMAX film schedule of current and upcoming releases and do the math! IMAX offers a Power Pass for an annual fee of $40 which entitles you to discounts and perks for screenings. It may be a money saving option for you to consider.
