The Joel Lane Museum House is an important heritage site of statewide significance. It was the home of Col. Joel Lane, a Revolutionary War patriot, who sold 1,000 acres of his land to the State of NC in 1792 to build the capital city, Raleigh, on. Built circa 1770, Joel Lane’s home is the oldest home in Wake County and a jewel of Georgian mid-Atlantic colonial architecture. It was fully restored and furnished in the 1970s and is open for tours led by costumed docents. Admission: Adults: $5; seniors: 65+ $4; Students: $3; children under 6: Free Guided tours offered Wed through Fri at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, and 1:00. Saturdays at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Open Sunday afternoons for groups by appointment.
The mission of the Joel Lane Museum House, Inc. is to bring history to life by educating the public about 18th-century North Carolina, about Colonel Joel Lane, a founding father of Raleigh and Wake County, and about his home, the "Birthplace of North Carolina's Capital."
