There’s always good music to be found and heard in the Triangle -- this isn’t news. But when good local music comes together for an even better cause, there’s no excuse for passing up the opportunity to take it all in. This Sunday (8/15), a very special benefit concert takes place at downtown Raleigh’s The Pour House Music Hall in honor of local chef and owner of Mo’s Diner, Hamid Mohajer.
Nearly four months ago, Mohajer, a longtime Triangle resident and 13 year owner/operator of one of downtown Raleigh’s favorite restaurants was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, and in an instant, his daily life of 52 years took a completely different direction. Even with insurance, the medical bills for his chemotherapy and radiation treatments began to mount, and soon expenses exceeded his insurance’s coverage cap for the year. These days Mohajer’s unable to work in his restaurant, yet his wife (and business partner), Holly, and his dedicated staff have been taking care of the restaurant and its loyal diners in his absence.
But once word began to circulate within the community about Mohajer’s situation, it wasn’t long before those he’s touched in so many different ways decided to pull together on his behalf. His staff created Friends For Hamid along with a series of events ranging from special wine dinners hosted by area renowned chefs to art receptions to music concerts all in hopes of raising funds to help the Mohajers with their rising medical costs.
This Sunday’s music benefit cranks up at 5pm with the following bands: Mommie (5pm), Starmount (6pm), Greg Humphreys (acoustic) (7pm), The Connells (acoustic) (8pm), Richard Bacchus and the Luckiest Girls (8:40pm), Maldora (9:30pm), Static Minds (10:20pm), Jeanne Jolly (trio) (11:20pm).
$10 is the suggested donation for entry to Sunday’s music fest. For a complete list of other events lined up in the coming weeks and months or to make a donation, visit www.friendsforhamid.com. You may also visit www.the-pour-house.com for more information on Sunday’s event.
HelloRaleigh Tip: If you're more of a foodie than you are a music fan, then be sure to look into the remaining benefit dinners scheduled around town. Many of Hamid's peers are pulling out all the stops, and some have already sold out!
