Venture to City Plaza in downtown Raleigh beginning this Thursday, and you’ll see a most lively and curious multi-dome structure to say the least. For four days only, from Thursday through Sunday, choose to enter the world of Mirazozo and experience your own personal version of an alternate reality soaked in rays of filtered “liquid color” and vibrant hues of light within its maze of tunnels and cavernous domes.
Known as a luminarium, this inflatable walk-in sculpture on a monumental scale is the newest creation by the acclaimed Architects of Air hailing from England, making its World Premiere and only United States appearance this year. Since 1992, the Architects of Air have been presenting these aesthetic, accessible structures inspired by pure forms of geometry and nature, Islamic architecture, Gothic cathedrals, and modern architectural innovators. Mirazozo is one of five sculptures currently on tour across the world.
At 6,000 square feet, the translucent plastic structure features several dodecahedral domes and a large central dome, boasting the largest open space structure the Architects of Air have ever built. This exhilarating exhibition is best seen to be believed and best entered to be understood. Because the interior atmosphere of Mirazozo is determined by how the public inhabits the luminarium at any given time and is affected by external factors of changing light and weather, every visit offers a new experience all its own. Reported to be both stimulating and tranquil, ready your senses for a complete immersion of transporting sound, light, and form.
Presented in conjunction with Artsplosure, Raleigh’s highly regarded annual arts festival featuring renowned artisans and musicians from across the country, Mirazozo is child friendly (those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult), engaging for all ages, and it is also wheelchair accessible. Admission is $5 per person and will be opened to the public Thurs. & Fri. from 1pm-7pm and Sat. & Sun. from 11am-7pm. Raleigh is one of only a handful of cities in the United States to ever showcase the Architects of Air installations, so this is quite an opportunity to encounter. After Raleigh, Mirazozo makes its way to Canada, then onto Europe. For more information on the structures, visit www.architects-of-air.com.
HelloRaleigh Tip: You will be required to remove your shoes to enter Mirazozo, so consider taking a pair of socks to wear while walking through the sculpture.
