Production Notes - Notes provided by Summit Entertainment - SYNOPSIS It all begins... with a choice. In The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third chapter in Stephenie Meyer's phenomenally successful series, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and her friendship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life. While most of her high school friends are receiving college acceptances and sending graduation announcements, Bella is making a decision so she can be with her love Edward always. But, she is struggling with Edward's compromise (that she marry him before he agrees to be the one to change her into a vampire) and the consequences that these choices will bring to herself, her family, and her friends. Meanwhile... a war is coming. By playing with the blind spots in the Cullen Family's mystical gifts, an unexplained force has created a Newborn Army - made up of the newly turned vampires whose strength, viciousness, and uncontrollable blood-lust is at its greatest in the first months of supernatural life. Are they a tool of Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) in her single-minded pursuit of vengeance, or of the all-powerful Volturi, making sure that Bella follows through on her intention to become immortal? As the Newborn Army, led by the pawn Riley (Xavier Samuel), makes its way towards Forks and the Quileute lands, the Cullens and Wolf Pack must choose to put aside their instinctual conflict and form an alliance to protect Bella and their community from a larger threat. As they prepare for battle, Bella learns more about the secret history of the Quileute tribe, the growing Wolf Pack, and the origins of Jasper and Rosalie. This knowledge will help her understand the bonds formed by the wolves, recognize her love for Jacob Black, and contribute to the protection of those she loves. With more of the action, love, friendship, jealousy, and passion that made Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon smash hits worldwide, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is a revenge-fueled, romantic continuation of the internationally popular vampire story. Based on Stephenie Meyer's bestselling book series, the novels and films constitute a full-blown cultural phenomenon with a dedicated fan base that eagerly awaits each installment. In less than five years, Stephenie Meyer has become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. The translation rights for her four Twilight novels have been sold in nearly 50 countries and 100 million copies have been sold worldwide. Her books have been on the bestseller list for over 142 weeks, and counting. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg, based on the novel Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner star. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is in theatres and IMAX(R) on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. THE PHENOMENON CONTINUES The Twilight Saga film series stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner and tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward Cullen, a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together...even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. To complicate matters, Bella's best friend Jacob Black is a werewolf, designed solely to kill vampires. The action-packed, modern day vampire love story Twilight, the first film in the series, was released in theatres on November 21, 2008 to a blockbuster reception. The second installment of the film franchise, The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released November 20, 2009. The franchise has grossed over $1.1 billion in worldwide box office ticket sales to date. Both films set subsequent home entertainment records: The Twilight Saga: New Moon sold over 4 million DVD units in its first weekend of release in March of 2010 -a tally surpassing Twilight, which sold 3.8 million DVD units in its first weekend in 2009, and went on to be the top selling DVD title of the year with 9.2 million units sold. Thousands of retails locations nationwide took part in midnight release events for insatiable Twilight fans, who are eager for more of the continuing story in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Like the novel, the movie sees the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black reach a turning point while the Cullens and the Wolf Pack must unite against a common danger. ``When we started to make these movies a lot of people would say that the third one's going to make the best movie, says Wyck Godfrey, one of the producers of all three films. ``I think a lot of people feel that way because Eclipse has the most action with the climax involving a huge battle between wolves and vampires and newborns. Plus, you know that the Bella/Edward/Jacob relationship is going to come crashing in Eclipse. ``But to me, Eclipse is really about Bella having come to the decision that she is absolutely going to become a vampire and she begins to really evaluate what that's going to cost her, adds Godfrey. ``She must weigh the pros and cons of the ramifications of choosing to become Edward's eternal lover. Author Stephenie Meyer agrees, ``For me the biggest theme was always about having to face the consequences of your choices, and that even the right choices have consequences, and not making a choice has a consequence. One of the biggest things about growing up is that grownups realize, if I do A then I have to deal with B, and they take that into account. Bella has to become a grownup and start dealing with the consequences of her actions. The complicated relationships between the multitude of characters intensify in her story. ``Jealousy and trust play into any human relationship. It's an interesting thing for me to explore and when I'm writing, I find that I just get really tightly wound up in the intricacies of human relationships and that's what always brings me back, comments Meyer. ``There's so much story with Victoria, Riley, and Bree that wasn't in the book. When we were working on scripting Eclipse, I had to sit down with Melissa and a bunch of people at Summit, and just explain to them blow by blow exactly what Victoria was doing, so that we could make sense of it all. That was a lot of fun because there's so much to that story that nobody knows because it's not in the novel. So that was cool and I'm glad that some of that is in the film, so that people get to see some of the back story that was going on that Bella wasn't aware of. ``I rely enormously on Stephenie and have so increasingly on each movie, and Eclipse more than the other two, confirms screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. ``For Eclipse, we traveled beyond the book and went deeper into the mythology that Stephenie had already developed. She shared some of that with me and enabled me to flesh out the movie and to give us some different perspectives on some of the other characters. The mysterious new character Riley is highlighted in the film. ``Because the books are all from Bella's point of view, you're only introduced to Riley when she's introduced to Riley. But Stephenie had, of course, thought of how Riley came to be, so I got the opportunity to flesh Riley out as a character, so we're not just dropping him into the third act, reveals Rosenberg. ``Eclipse was the hardest of the three to write, adds Rosenberg. `` I thought it would be the easiest because it has all this great action. When I actually got into writing it, I realized that the action's only in the third act. So, it was about pulling the action and the tension into the rest of the movie. So it actually ended up being the most challenging of the three and actually maybe my favorite script. Following in the footsteps of Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz, director David Slade was selected to lead the filming of the action-packed third installment of The Twilight Saga. ``We always wanted to shake up the styles of the various movies, so we always thought that we would have different directors for each movie, explains Godfrey. ``For Eclipse, we wanted somebody who showed an ability to work with young actors and get great performances, but also someone who had a larger visual style with a bigger scope and an ability to shoot great action. David Slade emerged as a fantastic candidate. Plus, he was somebody who loves myth and the supernatural. His movie Hard Candy was totally reliant upon performance, and his second film 30 Days of Night, displayed that visual style. He came in and really presented his vision for the movie and we realized he could really give us what we were looking for, especially with the action that we want for the climactic scenes. ``What attracted me to this project was that it is a great story and a tremendous challenge for me as a filmmaker. I don't like doing the same thing over and over again, because I learn from being challenged. On one level this was the biggest challenge out there -to make a film of this scope, in this amount of time, and to go into a different genre essentially. Yes, I've done a vampire film, but Eclipse is a very different kind of thing. This is a romantic story, which swings from a darker more abject feeling to very pure romantic scenes. To do very emotional scenes was a huge challenge and fun and a way to grow. But most importantly, I'm always looking for a great story and now, having read all of the books, Eclipse is my favorite story. So I think we're blessed with the best story, and directors like good stories cause we know that most of our job is done already, laughs Slade. ``Eclipse is one of the broader stories. I think that New Moon was very sophisticated in its involvement of emotions between the three characters, comments Slade. ``But what I wanted to do with Eclipse, because it had so many larger scale stories, was to go for a more cinematic approach to the film. Eclipse is packed with story and a lot of epic things that happen. It's a big thick book. So, I felt that this particular film had to have a really cinematic edge to it. Slade collaborated closely with the creative team - producers, screenwriter, author, actors - already in place on the series. ``David's truly an artist with a really odd, dry sense of humor, which I totally connect to, comments Godfrey. ``He approaches every scene with an idea visually of what he wants to accomplish, and he can describe and present his vision really clearly. ``If I'm going to shoot a certain way, it's important to, wherever possible, write it into the script. I would show my storyboards to Melissa and she would incorporate those storyboards into the writing, says Slade. `` Sometimes we'd talk about character and the specifics of ideas and back story. Melissa has a tremendous understanding of story and character, and she is just really fast and smart, really got an idea very quickly when I'd be trying to describe something aesthetically. Then we'd all get on the phone with Stephenie Meyer and run these ideas by her and she'd give us great insight. Melissa was really a great brainstorming partner to get this epic story told. When we received Stephenie's approval, we felt like that's the last word on the subject, because this is her universe. ``Every movie has been a little bit different on the screenwriting process, shares Meyer. ``With Twilight, I got to see the script pretty close to the final draft and I gave them some notes. Nothing really in depth, because I was worried about overstepping so I just pick the things that were really a big deal. With the first one, we had this girl party going on with Catherine and Melissa and me, and it really felt cool just to have all the ladies together. Meyer adds, ``With New Moon, it was cool because Chris is a writer/director. He understood my side and I understood his. He was great about saying, 'What do you think?' With one scene in particular, I know that he just said, 'Let's just do this right out of the book.' As a writer you love to hear that. ``With Eclipse we were all back and forth even after we started filming. It's a very long book with a lot that goes on. I think we kept trying to fit things in and then pulling things out... it was complicated. So I worked with Melissa a lot on that. She read a short story that I was working on and was able to put some of that in. Melissa and I worked together really well just going over the different information and late nights and dinners. It was fun! Melissa's great and it's kind of like a slumber party whenever I'm with her. ``Each experience has been so different with each different director there's been a whole different feeling. David's great and we have really bonded on the subject of music. We tend to listen to the same things and he's directed some of my favorite bands' music videos, reveals Meyer. ``We really have this connection on that level and I think that his sensibilities in the videos and that sense of movement really serve him well with Eclipse. On set he's so nice and chipper. I think he's really fun to work with. The returning stars agree. ``I think it's awesome that we actors have the opportunity to work on the same story, with the same actors, and yet work with a different director, and be able to mold to their different styles. It's awesome for us. I'm so thankful we had that opportunity, says Taylor Lautner. ``I think this film is definitely going to be darker. We're at war and Victoria's looking for revenge. We got werewolves and vampires fully involved now. There's not a better choice out there than David Slade for that. ``It is much more action-oriented, adds Pattinson. ``New Moon is a very internal film and moves at a very different pace. Eclipse is much more frantic and there needs to be more immediacy about everything, which David likes. Plus, I think the tone is a lot harsher. The fight scenes in this are much more scrappy and feral. Even when people are talking to each other, everything seems like it's much more immediate. I think people will be quite shocked at the quicker pace. ``Oddly enough I think this has been the easiest of all three. It's not been hard to get back into this at all. Especially coming out of New Moon, which was such a cerebral experience in terms of what Bella had to go through. Bella's much more industrious in this movie -she's got a lot more to do. She's called upon to actually deal with things that don't necessarily have an emotional drain on her. I've been in this horrifying life-threatening situation a million times, I think I can handle it a little bit better this time, laughs Stewart, ``Eclipse was my favorite book and audiences are going to love the film because you still got the romance element at its strongest -we got Bella, Edward and Jacob, comments Lautner. ``But we're also at war, so the action level is through the roof. David Slade's bringing a darker cool tone to it. This just might be my favorite... so far. ``Stephenie's been here a lot more in this one than on the other ones. She's not really directly intimidating, but just knowing she's watching the monitor can be quite intimidating. But in a lot of ways, it is handy, especially if you want to win an argument with someone. Stephenie can you just say that this happened in the book? That can be helpful, laughs Pattinson. Godfrey adds, ``Stephenie has had more opportunity to come up on Eclipse, since she's not selling a book right now. In fact, she lives in my trailer, when she's visiting, laughs Godfrey. ``What's great about having her is that as we're shooting a scene, she'll see things that we don't see, because she's lived with these characters and these books for much longer. At times, she'll say 'you might want to think about this.' Ultimately it always enriches the scene that we're shooting. So, having that extra set of eyes is fantastic. She's really involved deeply in the development of the screenplay and making sure that we're getting all the important parts of the books in. She's even involved in the casting, because they're described so clearly in her books. We show all the auditions to her and get her feedback, so in a sense she's almost really a producer on the movie. ``I am in a really fortunate position where I work with Summit and we're friendly with each other and we get along and we shoot ideas around. That's not the norm -generally a writer signs the contract and then that's it... you don't hear from anyone until your movie comes out, relates Meyer. ``I'm really lucky because I find the whole movie making business fascinating. I've learned a ton and I've met some really cool people. So I'm really grateful that they've let me be involved and that I get to have the experience of making sure the movies reflect my vision. I love that. I get overruled sometimes and I understand why that has to be, not everything can fit in. But just to be a part of the conversation is great. Godfrey believes the fans will embrace what the filmmaking team has done in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. ``It's the culmination of everything that they've been waiting for. I feel like it's been a slow buildup to the explosion of all of these external elements crashing in on Forks, Washington -all because of Bella's decision to become a vampire. THE CAST CONTINUES TO GROW The Twilight Saga: Eclipse sees the return of the major cast established in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, plus along with director David Slade, several new actors and characters join the Twilight family. Slade worked intensely with Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed exploring the past of their characters. ``With the back stories in Eclipse, you actually get to do a 1930's movie, you get to do a Western, and you get to go back into the 1700's and 1800's.... plus this big contemporary movie. New cast members playing vampires include Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria, Xavier Samuel as Riley, and Jodelle Ferland as Bree. Additional Quileute characters are introduced: Julia Jones and Booboo Stewart as siblings Leah and Seth Clearwater, as well as Alex Rice as their mother Sue Clearwater (who is widowed by the death of Harry Clearwater in The Twilight Saga: New Moon). Other notable new cast members are Jack Huston as Royce King, and singer Peter Murphy as The Cold One. Bella, Edward, and Jacob: The Pinnacle of the Triangle Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon made Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner into global household names for their portrayals of Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black. ``Eclipse is about a triangle and the tension between these three characters, comments screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. ``The rivalry and jealousies -just the most basic of all human emotions of love and loss. At its core, it is all very raw and it all comes to a head in this movie. It's just really rich territory to mine. It's so great writing the character of Bella, getting to bring out her strength and really getting to explore the depth of that character, particularly as portrayed by Kristen Stewart. She has such inner strength and she's really becomes a heroine in this story. I love writing those kinds of characters. ``Ultimately, it's a love story. This is all about finding a way for Bella and Edward to live in a world where you know they shouldn't be able to exist together. The great thing about these projects is that we've had the same screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg from beginning to end, and we have actors who understand their characters deeply. Also, they really understand the books. They know exactly what they are trying to accomplish in each scene. Plus, the directors that we've chosen have all become experts on the books that they're directing. So from the beginning of production, you click right back into these characters. I feel like Rob and Kristen just kinda zip on their Bella and Edward suits and snap right back into it, laughs producer Wyck Godfrey. ``We've been living with these characters for a while now, agrees Stewart. ``We learn more and more about them as time goes on and actually adapt to them. We're ourselves outside, but as soon as action comes, we're in Jacob mode or Bella mode or Edward mode, agrees Stewart. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse explores different aspects of love: real love, fantasy love, and the possibility of being in love with two people at the same time. ``For me, the love triangle is about fantasy love and reality love, explains author Stephenie Meyer. ``I had a chance to take one person and make her choose between the two. Bella really falls in love with Jacob in New Moon without realizing it, because the only love she's ever had in her life is this fantasy - head over heels, the most amazing person in the whole world suddenly picks you, and you just can't even believe how lucky you are, and everything's wonderful and perfect - type of love. Then she falls in love with Jacob in the real way that it usually happens, where he's your best friend and you just want to spend all your time with him. But she doesn't realize what it is, because she's only understood love from a different perspective. ``So in Eclipse, she has to come to terms with those feelings and understand that she does love him beyond just a friend, and then choose between that and the fantasy love, adds Meyer. ``Because of who the characters are, the end was inevitable for me - she would choose Edward -but I wanted her to really have to look at what she was choosing and what she was giving up, and put full weight on both of those choices before she made it. ``Edward is a good ideal for the pure true love that does exist in the world. Then Jacob is this more human love, which has flaws and faults, but it's still honest, says director David Slade. ``I think one of the things that is so attractive about these stories is that they do postulate the idea of true love in a culture where it's not very common. True love's a wonderful thing and sadly it's not been hugely abundant and apparent, especially in the media. But, it is difficult to make a great story out of something as simple as pure love, because usually, great stories come from great conflicts. What Stephenie's done so cleverly is make a great conflict, but not at the expense of true love, which is one of the reasons I personally believe these films and these books are so universally successful and popular. ``We have the idea that love is dangerous, and vampires are dangerous too, but let's make them somehow acceptable and let's make them good. Let's make them aspirational, adds Slade. ``Let's allow our female protagonists to have choices. Again, I think these things are not common. The saga empowers the female protagonist to not have sex and for that to be okay. That isn't to say that sex is bad, but it is to say that there could be a natural rhythm to a relationship that's okay. I think that also it's very attractive to the people who read these books and I find that to be culturally very healthy. After all we are living in a culture where women are very overtly sexualized, particularly young women. ``Eclipse starts on a high note, Edward and Bella are together and happy and coming down off of the dramatic experience that they had in Italy, comments Stewart. ``Basically, I'm still being hunted by vampires, but the biggest problem in my life is being able to acknowledge that there are different levels of loving someone. I must admit to myself that I am totally in love with my best friend, but just not as much as my real, true love, who obviously is Edward. For me, Eclipse is about growing up and making decisions and realizing that the choices that you make aren't necessarily instinctual. As much as I love Bella for not being ashamed of anything that she does, at this point in the series she's growing up and maturing to a point that can she actually be able to say that 'I'm not always right.' ``There's a lot of talk about Bella's choice in this film, that her choice is going to have consequences, and of course it is. You do not come back from this choice. If you make the choice to become immortal, you do not become mortal again. It's one of the more extreme choices that a character in a fantasy story could choose. The story positions Bella to have to transform to make that choice. This is something that's easily missed and I think it's important and it's summed up in the closing scene of the film, says Slade. ``Bella has to emotionally transform to be able to make this choice fully and with all of her heart, states Slade. ``The true love that she has for Jacob, however misguided that love is, it still exists and it creates conflict for her. So this choice has tremendous consequences, but it is possible to make these choices and transform into a different kind of person, a person that can make this choice and live with this choice and this is what ultimately Bella is able to do, but she is only able to do it through going through this story. At the end, she understands that she has faced all of these dangers and done it easily, and it surprised her. So she comes to this conclusion that she belongs in Edward's world, much more so than she belongs in the human world. I think that makes it easier for her to make that choice -in fact, it makes it impossible for her not to make that choice. ``Bella is interesting. We begin the movie with Bella choosing Edward, based on this romantic ideal, an immature choice in some ways. She hadn't completely and thoroughly thought it out. Because choosing Edward and choosing to become a vampire, that's a hard thing to wrap one's mind around when one is 18 years old, comments Rosenberg. ``So, the arc of the movie is about Bella's choice... making a mature choice, an informed choice. We begin with her having chosen Edward from an emotional place, but by the end, she's chosen him from a much deeper understanding of life and consequences. Pattinson adds, ``The first film is about new love. The second film is about loss. This film is about just how difficult a relationship can be when it's real. It's become a committed relationship, which makes this more difficult because Edward has definitely decided to very much become a part of Bella's world. Edward has been quite similar in the last two movies because he'd been allowed to live in a very isolated way. Now, he's accepting the fact that he's in a real relationship with Bella, it means that he has to become part of the real world and actually integrate himself and become more human. He'd been living so aloof, that it's quite difficult to get up to speed and behave normally and feel everyday emotions that normal people feel. Dealing with that becomes quite difficult when you haven't done it so long and you're forced into doing it. He finds it very difficult to be normal because he can't remember. Stewart adds, ``It's unconditional love that is being tested. It's an interesting thing. They are undeniably devoted to one another, but in this Edward and Bella talk more. They're more open. They're more willing to let other people into their lives and not having it be just this exclusive relationship that is going to take out everything around it. It's bringing this really heightened relationship -that has caused massive problems in a lot of people's lives -into a place where they can function normally. ``Their relationship has basically come down to the fact that Bella is completely determined to become a vampire and have Edward be the one to change her, explains Pattinson. ``Edward is still reluctant to that, but has decided that if they marry each other, then he'll be more understanding and possibly follow through with it. But then other threats come up the threat of jealousy, the threat of insecurities, and not being good enough for your partner. Instead of running like in New Moon, in Eclipse Edward has to fight for the relationship and not just fight the bad guys. Edward also has to fight with his sense of virtue. ``Edward is from a different time, so he actually has an entirely different set of values, comments Stewart. ``It's interesting to have people who look the same age, but he's essentially an old man dating an 18 year-old girl. So, he wants to be married and she doesn't. But they want exactly the same thing from each other, they just have different ways of expressing it. It's fun to watch them deal with that. ``Edward wants her to have every last human experience she can have before she becomes a vampire, explains Godfrey. ``For Edward, he wants to have the fulfillment of marriage before he embarks on the journey that he's going to have with her for the rest of their eternity. So, part of her dilemma is that decision to marry Edward before she becomes a vampire. Edward still hopes that maybe she'll change her mind about becoming a vampire, because he ultimately still worries about the cost of her soul. Meyer adds, ``Eclipse actually takes place in only one calendar month of time, in which the two of them are constantly adjusting and readjusting to each other, and trying to find the right balance. Bella is very single minded, whereas Edward constantly over thinks everything. His personality swings back and forth from the beginning where he's very overprotective and he realizes that he goes too far; and then he swings back in the other direction and realizes I need to control myself and back off, and then he goes too far the other way. He probably would have been completely within an appropriate behavior level to say to Bella, I really don't want you to spend so much time with Jacob, not because I'm afraid for your safety, but because it makes me uncomfortable. She would have then listened to that. There's a lot of confusion between any couple -saying what you really mean, knowing what you really want to say, and they bounce back and forth trying to figure each other out. ``Edward has a different mindset in this one, says Pattinson. ``He's jealous and petty to other people. With Bella, he's possessive. He has 17-year-old-guy emotions - like being jealous of other guys who fancy his girlfriend -which I think affects everything. But, he's really coming out of his shell in this one. Because Edward has solidified the relationship, Bella gets some control back. Edward's not up to the same speed as Jacob and Bella because they're having a normal, natural relationship and before he's just been speaking these absolutes all the time and being this aloof guy. Even though the love triangle developed in New Moon, it's much more present in Eclipse. Edward really has to fight with him and feels like he has to prove himself to Bella. ``I like to think of Eclipse as the height of the love triangle, says Lautner ``In New Moon, Jacob hated Edward with a passion. Now in Eclipse, when he's forced to team up with Edward to protect Bella, he gets to know Edward a little more. So, in the tent scene, Jacob and Edward have a heart-to-heart talk. Edward can read my thoughts, so he understands everything that is going on inside of my head, but I have no idea what's going on inside his mind. So I ask him to let me in -if you can pick through my brain then you better let me pick through yours. And he does. He lets me know that he thinks that I might be a better choice for Bella than he is. Jacob really appreciates that he was able to let him inside his brain for a second. ``My very favorite is the tent scene, agrees Meyer. `
