Not that the New York Times article “The 41 Places to Go in 2011” is telling locals something they didn’t already know about downtown Durham, but it’s nice to know that others are taking notice. In the Travel section of the January 7, 2011, edition of the New York Times, Durham captured No. 35 on the newspaper's list of 41 places around the world as a worthy spot to venture to in this brand new year.
Why? Ingrid K. Williams, writer of the profile on Durham, noted the city’s booming local, seasonal restaurant scene downtown as the draw. Establishments mentioned specifically were Parker and Otis and Revolution. Indeed, creative cuisine is alive and well in the Triangle and is recognized as such.
One of only six places in the United States to make the selective cut of 41, Durham shared the spotlight with international locations including Iceland, Zanzibar, Hangzhou, China, and Salonika, Greece. Not bad company to keep.
