Raleigh Wide Open Street Festival Cancelled for 2011

Raleigh City Manager J. Russell Allen said in a news release Tuesday March 22, that the Raleigh Wide Open 2011 street festival will be cancelled because of to the city’s current budget concerns.

The city will conserve an estimated $150,000 to $180,000 that would have been spent on the downtown festival, scheduled for July 30, 2011. Allen said city officials were looking for ways to cut the budget, and the street festival was a major expense item that didn’t seem essential.

In years past, the Raleigh Wide Open event has been held as a celebration heralding the major revitalization efforts in downtown.  Attendance of up to 100,000 people has been reported in recent years. This year would have been the sixth installment of Raleigh Wide Open.
