Raleigh North Carolina History

The state's history goes back to 1947, when the North Carolina General Assembly became the first state to use public funds to purchase art. St. Mary's College was founded in 1876, followed by Peace College, which became North Charlotte State University in 1917. Ten years later, the General Assembly established the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill, which later became North Carolinian University and eventually State College. Peace College was acquired by the First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh after it was forced to close its own college.

The city of Raleigh developed around 1789, when North Carolina became the 12th state, but not until 1792. The city was built on a wooded area in 1788, a year before the founding of the United States, and was chosen by the US Army and North Carolinians as the site for a planned capital. In 1788, had the city not been developed, the site of a future city would have been chosen, so in 1792 North Charlotte State created its first city, Raleigh, as the capital of its state, which was planned as a "capital."
